LAGUNA LIFESTYLE - APRIL EDITION

Welcome to this Easter edition of Laguna Lifestyle. Old habits die hard, but for most of us, this year’s Easter will be very different. We shall be travel-less, footy-less and, to some extent, extended-family-less. But let’s seize the opportunity of this new style of celebration. Happy Easter from us all at Laguna Pools. Stay safe, stay home …. and watch out for that Easter Bunny!

BENEFITS OF USING A LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT
This month we have interviewed one of Melbourne’s leading Landscape Architects, Heath Blair (BLArch), of Plume Studio. We discuss how he got to where he is, why he chose Landscape Architecture and the benefits of using a Landscape Architect.

How long have you worked as a Landscape Architect and why did you choose that path?
"I started out as a landscape apprentice, and have been working as a landscape architect for over 8 years now. A career in Landscape Architecture was a natural progression for me, I loved gardening as a kid. My grandfather was a keen gardener and I loved spending time with him outside. My father and I loved to draw and paint in the bush, so I guess landscape design is in my blood. I love the work of Australian artist, John Olsen. His work celebrates Australia’s landscape, colourful and fluid."

What is your favourite element of a backyard?
"My favourite element in a backyard is definitely the planting. I love the different textures and the influence the seasons have on a space emotionally. Planting is tricky, and it’s a science. Overall, it is extremely rewarding to use planting to bring together a space with which the client can engage."

Why should our clients use Plume Studio?
"We think we have a playful design language, a little more unstructured than others. Each project we do is intrinsic to the site, we go on a journey together. A fluid process from start to finish creating a holistic vision for your outdoor spaces. We are really hands on and we work closely with our clients to gain a sound understanding of their interests. We gain context and we plan how the landscape should perform and function over time. It is so important to really inject their personality into the project."

What’s involved in working with a Landscape Architect?
"Working with a landscape architect is about future-proofing your site, your asset, your home. It’s about going on a journey of ideas and what we start with may be very different from where we end up. The space is not just about now, but it’s about the next generation and we give due consideration to the whole space over time. Each project has its own set of opportunities and constraints, which makes my job as a designer challenging yet really rewarding. Giving you the ultimate result of a long-term stunning, functional and seasonal exterior."

What is the most common mistake that people make when planning their gardens?
"A common mistake is to not consider the whole space in totality. We start our design intent at the letterbox and move through the entire property with one cohesive design language and narrative."
