At first glance, it’s the stillness of the water that captures your attention.
Designed as a full perimeter wet deck pool and spa, water spills evenly from every edge into a concealed gutter system hidden beneath the surrounding paving. The result is a seamless water surface that reflects the home, landscape and sky with remarkable clarity, creating an ever-changing visual centrepiece within the outdoor environment.
Delivered alongside Matyas Architects and Hendco, the 10 x 4 metre swimming pool and 2 x 2 metre spa in Melbourne’s Bayside, were carefully integrated into a highly resolved architectural setting where every material, junction and finish contributes to the overall outcome.
While the visual outcome appears calm and understated, delivering a full perimeter wet deck pool of this nature requires an extraordinary level of precision. The knife-edge detail demanded millimetre-perfect tiling, while the concealed gutter system required exact calibration to maintain a perfectly level sheet of water across the entire pool and spa. Even the slightest variation would disrupt the effect, making accuracy at every stage of construction critical to the final result.
The pool and spa are fully tiled in CMC 130 Ice Blue ceramic mosaics from The Pool Tile Company, selected for their ability to enhance the clarity and colour of the water. Baton pavers surround the pool, introducing a strong architectural rhythm that complements the home’s contemporary design while framing the water as a central feature.
From every angle, the pool appears to dissolve into its surroundings. Reflections shift throughout the day, changing with the light and weather conditions, giving the water a dynamic quality despite its stillness.
The success of the project lies in what you don’t see. Beneath the waterline sits a highly technical overflow system designed to disappear completely from view. What remains is a seamless sheet of water that captures the surrounding architecture and changing light, transforming the pool into one of the defining features of the outdoor environment.
