Suspended within a grand Toorak residence, this Laguna-built indoor pool is a masterclass in technical precision and refined design, bringing architectural vision to life within a luxurious, light-filled space.
Designed by Rob Mills Architecture and constructed by Laguna, the 11.2 x 4.73 metre pool was conceived as a sculptural centrepiece – offering year-round functionality while aligning with the home’s European-inspired detailing. The brief called for seamless integration, premium finishes, and a space that felt calm, elegant and connected to the home’s proportions and symmetry.
Built entirely above ground, the pool sits within a pavilion-style wing, supported by a suspended floor slab that also conceals the plant room below. This structure required deep footings, reinforced blockwork, and precise engineering to ensure integrity and performance. A rolled wet edge was introduced along one side – adding gentle movement to the water’s surface and reflecting light from the dramatic overhead skylight. This detail, often used outdoors, was adapted for the indoor environment, requiring careful hydraulic planning to control flow, reduce splashback, and maintain acoustic comfort.
Finished in Bisazza Ghiaccio glass mosaic tiles, the interior shimmers with depth and luminosity, offset by Narvona Travertine coping that provides a warm and timeless edge. The vaulted ceiling in polished plaster draws light down into the space, while arched steel-framed doors open onto a wraparound balcony, subtly linking the room with the garden beyond.
Despite its serene appearance, the build demanded extensive coordination across engineering, pool construction, and architectural detailing. Every decision – from tile layout to water management – was carefully considered to ensure the pool felt completely at home within its surrounds.
This is a pool that balances complexity with elegance, demonstrating Laguna’s capability in delivering structurally advanced pools that feel effortless by design.
