At the edge of the Yarra River parklands in Templestowe, this pool and spa were designed to celebrate one of the property’s greatest assets – its remarkable natural outlook. Framed by native bushland and mature gums, the design creates the impression of water extending into the landscape beyond, transforming the backyard into a destination for both relaxation and recreation.
Designed by Sync Architecture and built by Laguna, the project centres around an 11 x 4 metre infinity edge pool, complemented by a generous 2.2 metre beach area and a raised 2.2 metre circular wet edge spa. Positioned directly off the home’s main living spaces, the pool was carefully elevated to create a seamless transition between the architecture and outdoor environment. The beach entry provides a relaxed space for lounging and family enjoyment, while the raised spa introduces a sculptural focal point that anchors the overall design.
A refined material palette enhances the connection to the surrounding landscape. The Pool Tile Company’s CMC315 Light Grey ceramic tiles give the water a soft blue hue that shifts throughout the day, reflecting the colours of the sky and surrounding vegetation. Bisazza Nuvole glass mosaic tiles were selected for the spa and infinity edge wall detail, introducing subtle texture, depth and light reflection while highlighting the curved form of the raised spa.
The infinity edge was central to the success of the design, requiring precise calibration to achieve the seamless waterline visible from the home. A concealed balance tank wraps around the corner of the pool, capturing and recirculating water while maintaining the clean visual effect of the vanishing edge. Careful consideration was also given to barrier compliance, with glass panels and stepped transitions integrated into the design to satisfy safety requirements without compromising the architectural aesthetic.
The completed pool offers a variety of experiences within a single outdoor environment. The expansive beach area encourages relaxed afternoons by the water, the raised spa provides year-round enjoyment, and the generous swimming area creates space for recreation and exercise. Together, with the outdoor living and firepit, these design choices create a highly functional outdoor retreat that responds to both the home’s architecture and its unique natural setting.
